No…
I’ve come to realize that I am starting to disqualify friends who forward instagram reels all day.
An example 24 hours from one friend:
- Sunday
- 10:36A: fashion trend critique
- 10:36B: comedian bit about cultural appropriation
- 10:36C: “Mexican” word of the day
- 10:36D: coke themed prank
- 10:35E: comedian bit about Maduro
- 12:59A: Gen Z joke about passenger princesses
- 12:59B: trend of Asian men moving to Colombia
- 18:33A: “My kids are not inbred”
- 18:33B: Review of best places to take a shit
- 19:59A: Clark Wallabees review
- 19:59B: Costo membership
- 19:59C: AI
- 23:26: Skit on obesity
Most of the reels I did not view or open for context. I based the description on the thumbnail.
This is doom scrolling and imposing doom on me. It has become an additional explore feed inside our DMs. I started to not react or reply with other reels to curb myself from stoking the behavior.
I confronted him in person later that week and lied about taking a social media cleanse.
Maybe I’m disqualifying him for how non sequitur the shares are but I think it’s more about the effort of it all. He’s sharing so much it diminished its entertainment value.
Does he show a reaction in real life while viewing them or is he sitting stoically doom scrolling as a fidget spinner replacement? Did he really open instagram in bed at 23:26 thinking I’d be interested in fat jokes?
Sure I’ll think it’s funny but this is not sustainable for my attention span.
